A Java applet is a program that is contained by a web page. When a browser user accesses a web page with an applet in it, the program is downloaded and run. Java applets can do almost anything. But they are very secure too -- they can not create, change, or delete anything from your computer unless you give specific permission to do so. Many Java applets are games and animations, but they can also be used to display and manipulate data from a database, facilitate data entry, transfer information using "sockets", and much more.

Java applets aren't just for the Internet. Applets can run over a local or wide-area network too. In fact, that's where they are at their most powerful. And the beauty of Java is that it doesn't just do Windows ... it does Mac, Unix, Linux, and more.

Here are some samples. To run the samples, you will need a Java 1.1 enabled browser like Internet Explorer 5.0, Netscape 4.0, or AOL 4.0.

The DataGrid Sample: Display your real-time data in a table, or grid anywhere in the world!

MasterMind Game: Play the classic "code cracking" board game.

Topographical Map: See a topographical map generated from USGS 7.5 minute Digital Elevation Model data.

Imaging: A simple image viewer.
