gunks.jpg (35354 bytes)       Shawangunks

The 'Gunks in New York are one of the premier climbing areas of the East. The cliffs are several miles long and up to about 300 feet high.  The routes tend to be steep with most containing ceilings and roofs. With solid rock and good protection, however, these obstacles can become less committing than they look from below.

My favorite routes so far: Madame Grunnabaum's Wulst (5.6) and Shockley's Ceiling (5.6).

Best Shawangunks climbing quote: "And there's another route called High Exposure? What was that we just climbed?" -- Scott Wootten, upon finishing the wild 3rd pitch of Madame Grunnabaum's Wulst.

Photos by Bob Foley unless noted otherwise.

The crux of Shockley's Ceiling (5.6). We waited under a roof for the rain to stop. The rock was still a bit damp when we climbed through the ceiling.  Photo by Doug Hey 7/99.

Ralph Stover State Park is located in eastern Pennsylvania.

My favorite routes so far: Hawk's Nest (5.6), Hummingbird (5.6), and Neanderthal (5.8).

Hawk's Nest (5.6).  Very nice first pitch. Skip the second, rotten pitch. Photo by Scott Wootten 5/99.
