It will take a little while to load the map (less than 1 minute at 56kbps). This Java applet loads USGS Digital Elevation Model data and renders topographical maps from it. These maps are not image files, such as GIF or JPEG. The images are actually being created by the program on your computer right now. The DEM data that the program uses is simply a series of numbers representing land elevation at a sampling rate of roughly every 30 square meters. The data for this map is large, about 1 Megabyte. It is compressed into a ZIP file so that only 200K needs to be downloaded. The maps are best viewed at a display resolution greater than 800x600. "Bushkill" USGS 7.5 minute Digital Elevation Model Map. This map covers an area of Delaware Water Gap National Park on the PA-NJ border, just north of "the gap". Note the Delaware River (dark blue) at the bottom right.
Click on the buttons to see different representations of the map.
* Technical note: These maps (all images, really) could easily be scaled, zoomed, rotated, skewed, or enhanced -- all in real-time on your computer. There would be no reason to keep downloading an image from a server for each manipulation.
